Each ferry company has different rules about which vehicles have to travel as freight.
Usually, any vehicle carrying commercial goods or designed to carry commercial goods (e.g. vans with company logos/sign writing) should travel as freight. In some cases, even if you're carrying personal furniture or household items, you may need to book as a commercial vehicle.
