Travel documentation post-Brexit
For British citizens travelling to Europe:
To travel to Europe, you'll need a passport that is valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave the EU.
You can travel to the EU as a tourist for up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa. There are other reasons for travel that don't need a visa; you can check here for the complete list.
Depending on the country you're travelling to, there may be different requirements, so we recommend checking the requirements for each country you plan to visit. Click here to check the gov.uk website for the most up-to-date information.
For European citizens travelling to the UK:
The requirements to enter the UK may be slightly different depending on your nationality. Generally, you'll need a passport that's valid for the duration of your stay, and you won't need a visa if you're travelling as a tourist.
Depending on where you are from, there might be exceptions and additional requirements, so we recommend checking this link for the complete list of requirements.
Driving in Europe post-Brexit
When driving your UK-registered vehicle in Europe, you'll always need the following:
- A valid driving license
- Your vehicle's registration document (V5c)
- Proof of car insurance
Some countries have different driving requirements and regulations, so it's best to check local government websites before you travel. Here's some country-specific advice for 6 of our most popular European destinations:
Belgium | France | Germany |
Ireland | Italy | Spain |

Travelling with pets post-Brexit
You can travel with your pet between the UK and the EU, but the requirements have changed since Brexit. It's important to make sure you have all the correct documents when you travel with your pet; without them, you will not be able to board the ferry.
Depending on the country you're travelling to, there may be different requirements, so we recommend checking the requirements for each country you plan to visit. You can find all the information you need in the following links:
- Bringing your pet to Great Britain
- Travelling with pets to an EU country or Northern Ireland
- Travelling to a non-EU country
We also recommend speaking to your vet. They can advise you on what vaccinations and documents you'll need.
Healthcare and travel insurance post-Brexit
For British citizens travelling to Europe:
Before you travel, you'll need to apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will cover you for medically necessary healthcare while in Europe.
If you have an existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you can use this instead until it expires. Once it expires, you'll need to apply for a UK GHIC to replace it.
We also recommend taking out travel insurance, as your GHIC or EHIC will not cover everything. For the most up-to-date information and to apply for a GHIC, click here.
For European citizens travelling to the UK:
When travelling to the UK, you'll need to bring your valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). We also recommend taking out travel insurance, as your EHIC will not cover everything.
